01\u00a0|<\/span> ExxonMobil, trapped in \u201coil addiction\u201d versus BP, announced strategy for zero carbon commitment<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n On October 28th<\/sup> (local time), the Financial Times published an article<\/a> titled \u201cWhy ExxonMobil is sticking with oil as rivals look to a greener future.\u201d The article quoted Amy Myers Jaffe, professor at The Fletcher School at Tufts University as saying, \u201cExxon was a superpower in every sense of the word\u201d, \u201cbut no more does it have this status.\u201c It continued by mentioning analysts\u2019 views that \u201ca quest for fast oil-production growth and an addiction to risky, high-cost projects have hobbled the company in recent years.\u201d The article concludes with an emphasis that \u201cthe lingering perception of some in the market is that the company\u2019s devotion to oil is a source of Exxon\u2019s current failings.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n On the other hand, BP’s transformation seems to be receiving positive responses from the market. In February this year, BP Chief Executive Bernard Looney pledged that \u201cBP will reduce its emissions to net zero by 2050 or sooner.\u201d Following this announcement, in August, the company revealed a detailed \u201cstrategy for decade of delivery towards net zero ambition\u201d, which includes cutting oil and gas production by 40% by 2030.
