The presentation particularly emphasized \u25b2 the carbon capture utilization storage (CCUS) technology that captures and sequesters CO<sub>2<\/sub> underground or on the seafloor, \u25b2 the pyrolysis and depolymerization technology for plastic waste recycling, and \u25b2 the battery metal recycling (BMR) technology to extract key minerals from waste batteries.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Nanum Gothic', sans-serif; font-size: 13pt;\">These technologies play a key role in SK Innovation\u2019s \u201cfrom carbon to green\u201d corporate structural transformation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Nanum Gothic', sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">|<\/span> CCUS <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6426\" src=\"https:\/\/askinno.com\/global\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/07\/210723_ICCDU_\uc774\uc131\uc900\uc6d0\uc7a5_\ubc1c\ud45c_\uc774\ubbf8\uc9c0_5-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1180\" height=\"724\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Nanum Gothic', sans-serif; font-size: 13pt;\">The CCUS technology, in particular, is considered an indispensable technology for CO<sub>2<\/sub> emission reduction. SK Innovation is already utilizing its original technology to participate in various CCUS projects at home and abroad. And the industry expects SKI to solve the CO<sub>2<\/sub> problem. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Nanum Gothic', sans-serif; font-size: 13pt;\">Since this May, SK Energy, a subsidiary of SK Innovation, has been promoting the national CCS project using the Korea National Oil Corporation\u2019s West Sea Gas Field. The goal is to store 400,000 tons of CO<sub>2<\/sub> in the West Sea Gas Field annually from June 2022, when the natural gas production is set to be shut down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Nanum Gothic', sans-serif; font-size: 13pt;\">The company also participates in the EU-funded REALISE project, aiming to make a new-generation absorbent to capture CO<sub>2<\/sub> in oil refineries, develop tools to verify and utilize CO<sub>2<\/sub> capture technology, and secure the capability to evaluate the economic feasibility of CCS technology. This project will continue until April 2023 together with other industrial, academic, and research organizations from China and the EU. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Nanum Gothic', sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">|<\/span> Plastic Recycling <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Nanum Gothic', sans-serif; font-size: 13pt;\">Regarding the plastic waste issue, SK Global Chemical, another subsidiary of SK Innovation is developing relevant products and technologies based on 3R (Reduce\/Replace\/Recycle) strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Nanum Gothic', sans-serif; font-size: 13pt;\">SK Global Chemical and SK Innovation Institute of Environmental Science &amp; Technology have developed an original technology to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">replace<\/span> its existing chemical materials with green materials. It has already released the eco-friendly PE wrap that can replace PVC, and PE-based one material that can replace PE\/PET\/NY multilayer packaging. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Nanum Gothic', sans-serif; font-size: 13pt;\">In addition, the company is developing a plastic-<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">reducing<\/span> technology to make packaging that uses less plastic and lighter automobile parts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Nanum Gothic', sans-serif; font-size: 13pt;\">As for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">recycle<\/span>, it is developing the pyrolysis technology, which uses heat to convert plastic waste into energy, and plans to improve the quality of pyrolysis oil, which is currently only used as fuel for industrial boilers, so that it can be used as feedstock at petrochemical plants. Moreover, it is actively working on depolymerization technology to recycle contaminated PET bottles and clothing that end up being incinerated or in landfills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6419\" src=\"https:\/\/askinno.com\/global\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/07\/210723_ICCDU_\uc774\uc131\uc900\uc6d0\uc7a5_\ubc1c\ud45c_\uc774\ubbf8\uc9c0_10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1180\" height=\"724\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Nanum Gothic', sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">|<\/span> Battery Metal Recycling <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6420\" src=\"https:\/\/askinno.com\/global\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/07\/210723_ICCDU_\uc774\uc131\uc900\uc6d0\uc7a5_\ubc1c\ud45c_\uc774\ubbf8\uc9c0_11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1180\" height=\"724\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Nanum Gothic', sans-serif; font-size: 13pt;\">Lee Seong-jun also mentioned that SK Innovation has secured the technology to extract lithium hydroxide (LiOH) from waste batteries, explaining that extracting lithium first makes the extraction of other key minerals \u2013 nickel, cobalt, and manages \u2013 easier. Lee emphasized that this technology is more eco-friendly as it requires a smaller amount of chemicals used as solvents. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Nanum Gothic', sans-serif; font-size: 13pt;\">SK Innovation\u2019s waste battery recycling technology has been verified for its eco-friendliness by Argonne National Lab, a national research institute under the US Department of Energy, as it can reduce CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions by 72% and 37%, respectively, compared to extraction of lithium from mines or salt lakes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Nanum Gothic', sans-serif; font-size: 13pt;\">With this battery metal recycling technology, SK Innovation plans to establish a battery circular economy to solve social problems while also securing raw materials for batteries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Nanum Gothic', sans-serif; font-size: 13pt;\">At the end of his presentation, Lee Seong-jun concluded, \u201cSK innovation is transforming its biz portfolio from hydrocarbon to \u201cGreen Energy and Materials\u201d based on ESG management for sustainable survival and growth.
