■ New MOU with Tra Vinh Province Targets Restoration of 300 Hectares by 2030”
SK Innovation is enhancing its long-term commitment to environmental sustainability through the expansion of its mangrove restoration project in Vietnam.
Following its initial launch in 2018, the company has signed a new memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the government of Tra Vinh Province and local social enterprise MangLub to restore 300 hectares of mangrove forests—equivalent to 420 soccer fields—by 2030.
MangLub, a social enterprise co-founded by SK Innovation, is dedicated to preserving mangrove ecosystems and fostering social value. The project will involve local communities in the planting and maintenance of mangrove saplings, supporting both ecological restoration and local economic growth.
Mangroves play a critical role in combating climate change by absorbing carbon up to five times more effectively than tropical rainforests and serve as natural barriers against coastal erosion, protecting communities from storm surges and rising sea levels. Despite their importance, Southeast Asia’s mangrove habitats have faced significant losses over recent decades due to industrialization and tourism, underscoring the urgent need for restoration and conservation efforts.
Since 2018, SK Innovation has planted around 910,000 mangrove trees across 236 hectares in Vietnam, Myanmar, Malaysia, and Fiji. This significant restoration effort has been supported by 2 billion Korean won allocated from the “1% Happiness Sharing Fund,” which is fueled by the generous contributions of our employees.
SK Innovation’s efforts in biodiversity conservation have earned the company recognition from both the Korean Ministry of Environment and the People’s Committee of Tra Vinh Province for its significant contributions to environmental protection and community development.
Kim Woo-kyung, Head of PR Office at SK Innovation, stated, “Vietnam remains a key region for SK Innovation. We are committed to advancing both economic and social value through continuous ecological restoration and community collaborations.”
