■ Signed MOU with LG Electronics and GRC to jointly develop ultra-high-efficiency immersion cooling solutions for AI data centers

■ Brings together SK Enmove’s cooling fluids, LG Electronics’ cooling systems, and GRC’s immersion tanks to deliver a comprehensive solution for the market.

SK Enmove has announced a strategic partnership with LG Electronics and Green Revolution Cooling (GRC), a leading US immersion cooling company, to jointly develop and commercialize immersion cooling solutions optimized for hyperscale AI data centers worldwide.

SK Enmove announced on October 27 that the three companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at LG Electronics’ chiller business site in Pyeongtaek, Korea. Attending the ceremony were Nam Jae-in, Head of Green Growth Division at SK Enmove, Lee Jae-sung, Head of ES Business Division at LG Electronics, and Peter Poulin, CEO of GRC.

This collaboration comes as the rapid growth of AI-driven data centers increases the demand for high-efficiency, eco-friendly cooling technologies. The three companies will combine their core technologies to jointly develop immersion cooling solutions customized for AI/hyperscale data centers, and validate their performance in real-world data center environments.

SK Enmove will supply the immersion cooling fluids; LG Electronics will provide the cooling systems; and GRC will deliver the immersion tanks. Together, these three companies will collaborate to offer a comprehensive ‘total package’ solution that would be difficult for any single company to provide on its own. Performance testing will be conducted at LG Electronics’ chiller facility, which houses a dedicated testbed for AI data centers.

Immersion cooling is a technology that directly submerges heat-generating electronic devices, such as data center servers, in a special non-conductive cooling fluid. This method uses high thermal conductivity liquids to rapidly and efficiently dissipate heat. When immersion cooling technology is applied, the Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of a data center becomes significantly lower compared to traditional cooling methods such as air or water cooling. This results in outstanding power savings and improved overall energy efficiency.

SK Enmove has established unrivaled expertise in cooling fluids—the core of immersion cooling technology—leveraging its accumulated technological capabilities in the fields of high-quality base oils and premium lubricants. Based on its pioneering role in the development and commercialization of immersion cooling technology in Korea, SK Enmove is expected to play a key role in this partnership.

SK Enmove made a strategic investment in GRC in 2022, becoming the first company in Korea to enter the immersion cooling market. In the same year, SK Enmove also successfully developed immersion cooling fluids specifically designed for data centers. In 2023, SK Enmove’s fluids were applied to SK Telecom’s data centers, marking the start of commercialization. In 2024, SK Enmove expanded its business by collaborating with Hanwha Aerospace and INCELL to commercialize cooling fluids for energy storage systems (ESS). And recently, the company partnered with SK On to enter the electric vehicle battery thermal management sector. With rapid commercialization and proven supply track records, SK Enmove is expected to lead the standardization of cooling fluids and continue to secure a leading position in the market.

Beyond validating the immersion cooling solutions, the three companies plan to actively pursue new business opportunities by leveraging their global networks and business experience.

LG Electronics offers total HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) solutions optimized for a wide range of spaces, including residential, public, commercial, and industrial facilities. Its comprehensive product lineup spans from large-capacity chillers to commercial system air conditioners and residential air conditioners. Recently, LG Electronics has been actively pursuing new growth opportunities in emerging sectors such as AI data center cooling systems, nuclear power plants, and mega-factories, to lead the digital transformation of the HVAC industry.

Pioneering the commercialization of immersion cooling solutions in 2009, GRC has continued to lead the market in partnership with global IT companies.

Lee Jae-sung, Head of ES Business Division at LG Electronics, stated, “This collaboration aims to maximize energy efficiency and cooling performance—key challenges for AI data centers. We will strengthen the global competitiveness of the AI data center industry with differentiated cooling solutions.”

Peter Poulin, CEO of GRC, commented, “Through this partnership, we expect to deliver innovative and proven value to our AI data center customers. By ensuring seamless integration and thorough validation of key immersion cooling components, we will support our customers in adopting systems quickly and reliably.”

Nam Jae-in, Head of Green Growth Division at SK Enmove, added, “By effectively combining the strengths and experience of our three companies, we expect to further enhance our competitiveness in the global data center immersion cooling market. We will lead the growth and transformation of the cooling market with innovative solutions and strategic partnerships.”
